North American truckload pricing in June increased 1.5 percent year-over-year and 1.0 percent month-over-month, according to the Cass Truckload Linehaul Index.

The truckload rate index, which uses January 2005 as its based, rose to 113.3 in June, compared with 112.1 in May, which was the lowest point for the year for truckload rates tracked by Cass.

Truckload capacity in June was “very closely” in line with seasonal trends, as growing truck tonnage, the hours of service law implementation and limited investment in new equipment was keeping capacity tight, Cass Information Systems said.

Meanwhile, North American intermodal costs in June dropped 0.5 percent year-over-year and 6.1 percent month-over-month, according to the Cass Intermodal Linehaul Index, which also uses January 2005 as its base. June was the lowest point this year for intermodal rates tracked by Cass, as the index fell to 121.9 from 129.8 in May.

June’s intermodal costs are at virtually the same point as in June 2011 and June 2012, Cass reported. However, the month-over-month drop of 6.1 percent took place despite rising intermodal container volume year-over-year. Other factors that affected the supply-demand-cost equation included declining diesel prices and an increasing container supply, Cass said.
